Steve Coast founded the project in 2004 while at university in Britain, initially focusing on mapping the United Kingdom. The OpenStreetMap website itself is an online map, geodata search engine and editor. OpenStreetMap uses its own topology to store geographical features which can then be exported into other GIS file formats. OpenStreetMap is freely licensed under the Open Database License and as a result commonly used to make electronic maps, inform turn-by-turn navigation, assist in humanitarian aid and data visualisation. Contributors collect data from surveys, trace from aerial imagery and also import from other freely licensed geodata sources. Most of the other custom objects (like trail heads, waterfalls, overlooks,etc.) only show up when you zoom much closer so they don't clutter the map.OpenStreetMap ( OSM) is a free, open geographic database updated and maintained by a community of volunteers via open collaboration. Yeah my custom trails are set to show on all zoom levels. All of my custom maps are in very remote areas so screen clutter is never a problem. Very hard to locate your custom map on the GPS screen when nothing in it appears until you are zoomed in a lot. Sometimes I will even put all objects in all levels, this greatly helps at times in being able to see where your present location is in relation to an entire trail system (assuming the map doesn't cover hundreds of miles). This makes it a lot easier to locate your custom map when it may be half way across the country from where you are located and you want to view it. What this allows is for this trail to be visible at all zoom levels on your GPS. Is to make the most major trail or most signifcant trail in the custom map always Major Hwy 0x01 and put it in all zoom levels (except the last one - of course it has to be empty).
